Mariah, Jenna, Ali and Kelsey from St. Louis Park Girl Scout Troop 10297 have contacted 40 organizations in St. Louis Park asking them to depict one of the 40 assets by creating a painting.

The 40 paintings will appear during a gallery show at the Children First Ice Cream Social on Sunday, May 17 at Wolfe Park and will also be made into a poster available for distribution that day. After the Ice Cream Social, the 40 paintings will be divided into smaller groups and be exhibited at public locations in the community. This project was made possible through the generosity of a St. Louis Park Arts & Culture grant.

According to the Girl Scouts, the project is designed:
• To build community by bringing together a variety of local organizations focused on an artistic project.
• To educate the community through art about Children First and the 40 developmental assets.
• To provide an advertising tool, the poster, for more than 100 trained Asset Champion volunteers to use in furthering their effort to communicate with the community about Children First.

The Girl Scouts were diligent about securing organizations that represented the community. The most difficult part of the project to date was narrowing the list to 40 groups because there are so many wonderful organizations that support St. Louis Park youth. Artists involved in the project are from pre-school age through senior citizens.

The 40 organizations participating are:
AAA Minneapolis
Aldersgate United Methodist Church
Aquila Primary Center
Benilde-St. Margaret's School
Boys to Men (St. Louis Park High School student group)
Byerly's
Central Clinic
Citizens Independent Bank
St. Louis Park City Council
City of St. Louis Park
Day One (St. Louis Park High School student group)
Early Childhood Family Education
Elmwood Neighborhood Association
English Language Learner class – St. Louis Park Junior High
St. Louis Park Fire Department
St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts
Girl Scouts
The Latino Association for Higher Achievement (St. Louis Park High School student group)
St. Louis Park League of Women Voters
Lenox Senior Center
Meadowbrook Collaborative
Minneapolis Jewish Day School
Minnikhda Vista Neighborhood Association
Nordicware
Park Nicollet Foundation
Parktacular
St. Louis Park Police Department
Ridgedale YMCA
Rotary Club of St. Louis Park
St. Louis Park School Board
St. Louis Park Special Education - 9/12 Program
St. Louis Park Business Council– TwinWest Chamber of Commerce
St. Louis Park Emergency Program - STEP
St. Louis Park Library
St. Louis Park Soccer Association
St. Louis Park Transportation Co.
Westwood Hills Nature Center
The Whole Learning School
Youth Development Committee
Youth Frontiers

Asset Champions Network Gathering
Tuesday, December 2
7 - 8:30 p.m.

St. Louis Park High School

The Tuesday, December 2nd Asset Champion Gathering will be focused on developing a tool for Asset Champions to connect and stay in touch. Michael, Jordan, Leigha and friends will train Asset Champions on the nuances of Facebook. The meeting will be held 7-8:30 p.m. in the Media Center at St. Louis Park High School.

During this session, our trainers will help Asset Champions create their own page and set them up as members of the Asset Champions Network group. A nice feature of Facebook is that when you receive a message, you can have an alert sent to your email. Through a link in the email message, you can receive your Facebook message.

This is a great opportunity to get up to date on this technology. Minneapolis AAA's Minneapolis Auto Foundation for Safety is dedicated to kids and traffic safety. (Safety)
9. The Oakhill Neighborhood Association hosts family events like a bonfire and sleigh ride and ice skating rink parties. (Caring neighborhood)
10. 150 non-parent adults volunteer in the public schools every week and working in classrooms, one-on-one or in small groups. (Achievement motivation)
11. A neighbor works an immigrant family in the neighborhood to help the children assimilate.
(Cultural competence)
12. Many from the community including people from the Police, Inspections and Fire Departments volunteer at Meadowbrook Collaborative's Homework Help program. Come hear Dr. Peter L. Benson. President of Search Institute and author of the soon-to-be released book, Sparks! How parents can help ignite the hidden strengths of teenagers.

While building Developmental Assets focuses on activating the community around young people to ensure that all kids get what they need to succeed through asset building...igniting a young person's Sparks focuses on the uniqueness of each child, her or his passion and ability to contribute to the world.

Dr. Benson, a leading authority on childhood and adolescence, will describe a simple yet powerful plan for awakening the spark that lives inside each and every young person. Sparks, when illuminated and nurtured, give young people joy, energy, and direction. They have the power to change a young person's life from one of "surviving" to "thriving." Grounded in new research with thousands of teenagers and their parents, "Sparks" offers a step-by-step approach to helping teenagers discover their unique gifts, and works for all families, no matter their economic status, parenting situation or ethnic background.

This event is co-presented with the St. Louis Park Schools Parent Academy.

A special dinner and conversation with Dr. Benson will be held at 5 p.m. The ticket price is $100 person person. Here’s a summary.

Asset Champions shared their successes:
- Becky from Westwood Hills Nature Center. One thing the Nature Center focuses on is the asset of "safety" after discovering from the young people who visit the nature center that having a safe outdoor experience is important to them. Becky has talked at a staff meeting about assets and why they are important. Then before the summer camps, she reminded staff about the importance of supporting kids while they teach about nature. She attached a list of the assets, highlighting the ones that their program touches. She includes 10 examples of how to connect with youth in their volunteer newsletter. Her ideas come from Search Institute's "150 Ways to Show Kids You Care," publication.

- Bob from Nurturing Our Retired Citizens (NORC) wrote an article for the organization's newsletter. He pointed out how teens and seniors are natural allies and how the rest of the population views them, (they dress funny, people worry about how they drive, etc.) He has talked to folks at Lenox Senior Center about events including promoting the Children First Ice Cream Social. He has also distributed copies of Search's "150 Ways" to NORC board members.

- Marjie from Aldersgate United Methodist Church kicked off activities with the Mayor, dressed in his red cape, and a teen member of the congregation, performing the "Asset Champion Man" skit at a Sunday service. (Photo above.) She has trained the church's 8-member staff and provided training at the adult education hour. There is an Asset a Week in the bulletin. After 40 weeks, they plan to have someone share an asset example in their Joys & Concerns during services. They also had each member write a commitment to touch the life of a child on paper handprints. The handprints are posted in fellowship hall as a reminder to how many lives they can reach. This summer, youth will be paired with Faith Partner adults. These relationships will not be solely faith-based, but will work toward the asset of "Other Caring Adults." She shared Search Institute's book "What Young Children Need to Succeed," written by Jolene Roehlkepartain that gives many practical asset-building examples.

Jennifer runs the Aquila Service Club which began in 2007 with the vision of providing 1-3 graders an authentic service learning experience. This year the Service Club grew from 15 to 40! They have been meeting since late fall and have done many amazing projects. Their projects include making things for and spending time at Golden Hills Living Center, organizing and successfully carrying out a school supply drive for an orphanage in Honduras, cleaning the Aquila camps on Earth Day, and visiting STEP to learn about the wonderful services they offer residents of St. Louis Park.

Lee-Ann, a teacher at Park Spanish Immersion, started a stepping dance group for students at the school that is comprised primarily of male students.

Sarah from the City/School Volunteer Office, shared opportunities for people, young and old, to volunteer during the summer Parktacular celebration.

UPCOMING EVENTS
• Children First Ice Cream Social, Sunday, May 18, 2-5 p.m. at Wolfe Park by the Rec Center. Volunteers are needed to help with set up and clean up, work at the Children First table handing out coloring books and scoop ice cream.
• Parktacular Parade, Saturday, June 14, 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Children First will have a convertible with people walking along side it handing out coloring books. Our super heroes have been invited to join us, and you're invited too!
• Dr. Peter Benson, President, Search Institute, presentation on his new "Sparks" research, on Thursday, September 25, 7 p.m. Save the date!
• Healthy Communities Healthy Youth pre-conference session focusing on the Asset Champions Network will be held in St. Louis Park on Wed., November 5. Share information with them. If they already know about the assets, make sure they know that you are an Asset Champion and that your organization has joined together with dozens of other St. Louis Park organizations to focus on youth through the Asset Champions Network.

It’s not hard to share the message. Here are some ways to do it:
❖ Show the Channel 4 Dimension Report video.
❖ Review the list of 40 Developmental Assets. Have people find an
asset that was important to them when they were younger OR have
them find an asset they envision themselves helping build in a
young person.
❖ Use “Asset Trivia” or any of the icebreakers from your Asset
Champion training manual.
❖ Include asset information on your website or in your newsletter.
❖ Explain why it’s important to build assets! Kids who have lots of
assets do better in school, volunteer in the community & have
healthier lifestyles. They are also less likely to be involved in risky
behaviors. Everyone has a role in building assets in youth.

Talk about what you already do to build Developmental Assets.
We already build assets in young people, whether we call it that or not. Part of being an Asset Champion is helping people be intentional about their support for young people. Share with each other the great things you already know that are going on.

Determine ways you can strengthen your asset building efforts.
❖ Is there a way to modify something you are doing to give it more of
an asset focus?
❖ What is something you can simply add to your day to demonstrate
that you are someone who cares about kids?
❖ Do you focus on building relationships while you interact with young
people? Do you say hi? Do you call them by name? Do you know
what their interests are? Do you notice when they are doing some-
thing right or provide constructive input when they are not?
❖ Recognize others with a simple comment when you notice they are
building assets in young people.

Need someone to talk through an idea or want to share what you’re doing? You can always contact Karen with ANYTHING to do with being an Asset Champion at (952) 928-6075 or atkinson.karen@slpschools.org or share it on this blog which you can access at the website: www.children-first.org

* “Your People” = co-workers, volunteers, students, parents, friends, members, staff, congregants, young people, colleagues or whoever it is you interact with as an Asset Champion.

(Photo by M. The format is designed to foster real conversation which also helps build communitiy in our asset building work. This makes it impossible to summarize all the great discussion, but here are some snippets from the meeting.
- Growing connections with kids is important.
- Kids teaching adults & the value of that.
- Keeping on the look out for the "invisible" child.
- Advocate for kids especially when rules don't make sense or work for youth.
- Adult influence is important & you need to preserve in developing relationships.
- Be intentional about asset building. In reviewing the service club at Aquila School, it touches 28 assets!
- Asset building: it's not efficient, but it's effective.
- Teachers have a significant impact on asset building.
- Responsive classroom is being carried beyond school hours into after school programs. What about into secondary buildings? Businesses? Homes?
- Assets are almost a "social grace."
- Smallest things make the biggest difference.
- An important asset for high school students is sense of purpose. When they have it other things make sense: homework, achievement motivation, etc.
- Community service can be tied into educational system. Motivate people at a young age.
- Older people need to pay long-term attention to the young.
- Boundaries: How rules are decided and who's involved is important. Kids should have a voice in it.

Quartery Gathering & Trainings

The next Quarterly Gathering of the Asset Champions Network is Monday, October 29, 7 - 8:30 p.m. at Knollwood Place Apartments. Take the opportunity to talk to kids.

Nominate someone to be in the Children First coloring book!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wRAAEW2ZBmE/RvgvNaxd9lI/AAAAAAAAAA0/jJYpA-_zZvk/s200/Super_Hero_silhouette.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113889284450809426" />
Children First is looking for real-life champions to be part of its first ever Asset Champions Coloring Book. The criteria is simply that the person you nominate must live, volunteer or work in St. Louis Park, MN, and be a young person's "asset champion" performing and or promoting any of the 40 Developmental Assets. There are super heroes all around us! Think of your neighbors, those involved in your faith community, people who volunteer for organizations or work with young people. Asset Champions can be any age.

Because of limited space in the coloring book, Children First will narrow the group down to 12. If you know someone you would like to nominate, send the following information to: info@children-first.org
- Your name
- Your nominee
- Your phone
- Nominee's phone
- Nominee's relationship to you
- Why is your nominee an Asset Champion?

(Art by Michael Christiansen)

Back to School and building assets

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_wRAAEW2ZBmE/RtQpiBbRxTI/AAAAAAAAAAs/mR3_yeoItlU/s200/JJ.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5103749942192751922" />
St. Louis Park School District had a Great Get Together to kick off the new school year. (Bob) Ramsey received the 2007 Gil Braun Community Service Award from The Rotary Club of St. Louis Park. Bob has been active in the St. Louis Park community for nearly 40 years with much of his focus on making it a better place for young people.

Bob retired in from St. Louis Park Schools in 1993 where he was associate superintendent to pursue his career as a writer. Bob has written over 20 books. Most of his books are trade books about education. He has a series of 501 books including “501 Ways to Improve your Child’s Self-Esteem” and “501 Tips on Parenting”.

Bob has several volunteer jobs. He volunteers at Day One welcoming high school students on the first day of school. He was co-chair during the launch year of Bookmark in the Park. Bookmark is the Park is a community reading project that encourages all residents to read the same book promoting community dialogue on it. Bob serves on several committees at his church. He was the chair of the Senior Summit bringing our community elders together at Lenox Community Center to share with community leaders issues that are important to them. Bob served on the Parktacular committee that plans St. Louis Park’s summer celebration. This summer he and his wife Joyce are the senior ambassadors for St. Louis Park. Bob is a member of the NORC (Nurturing Our Retired Citizens) Senior Consumer Advisory Committee

It’s appropriate that Bob is the recipient of the award that this year was renamed the Gil Braun Community Service Award, after Mr. Braun, one of the Rotarians instrumental for the creation of Children First. Bob was on the original steering committee that former school superintendent and Rotarian Carl Holmstrom put together to determine how to proceed in strengthen the community support for young people. Bob has remained committed to Children First since its inception in 1993. When the Children First Executive Committee wanted to document the story of Children First but didn’t know how, Bob stepped forward. He is the author “The Children First Story: How One Community Partnership is Learning to Put its Children & Families First.” Currently Bob is part of the Asset Champions Network for Children First.

Pictured above: Bob Ramsey with Steve Solbrack, 2006-07 president of The Rotary Club of St. Louis Park.

Have you received a "someone special" postcard?
